{Much of this is speculation without any real evidence to back it up, so take it with a very small grain of salt if you like.}
I have read many articles referring to the apparent lack of female zoos. The majority of these articles carry an atmosphere of negativity and even contempt for women. Am I alone in my acceptance of women as my equals? I will admit that there are differences aside from the obvious physical, but a lack of showing among females could be from the generally unfriendly attitude shown them.
First of all, the social differences. I have spoken to many women about their views of society and sexuality. As males many of us are totally unaware of the trials that pre-teenage females go through. This is an important area to focus on as it has great impact on the emerging self-image of the woman to be. Society does its best to squeeze us into a mold, females more so than males. Advertisements, television, jokes, and a plethora of other sources tell them that only beauty matters. To be anything other than a supermodel is to fail.
In the teen years (some well into their twenties) there can be an astonishing amount of rivalry. Through the competition for attention any perceived flaw can be used as a weapon. Obviously not all situations are alike, but this does happen - often.
Adding to the problem are the lies males tell them. I dare anyone to deny that many young men will swear on their own souls that they "love" a particular girl just to get into her pants. All the while telling the exploits to their friends, giving ammunition to those who would destroy a reputation given a chance.
Males on average (I include myself here) seem to feel an urge to announce their sexuality to others. Perhaps its a throw back from when we marked our territory. Women on average do not seem to be driven by this urge. Take a look at the homosexual community for confirmation. Gay males are far more noticeable and draw attention to themselves than gay females. The same is true for transexuals and even with heterosexuals.
I don't believe that the percentages are drastically different for males and females. Females just seem to blend in better and draw less attention to themselves. I have personally known four women who have confided in me about their experiences with animals, as opposed to the three males I know of (RL).
