This page lists some nice linux apps and comes complete with a plug for my favorite linux distribution Slackware
These are the programs I use either currently or in the past. Are they the best? I dunno, they're just ones I've used and can give an opinion about. I like working with the virtual terminals so most of the programs are for the command line. Programs that *require* X are listed with (X) at the end of the name
MUD clients/chat stuff
I spend a lot of my online time logged into various places, as such a client
is handy as hell. (Nothing sucks more than "telnet")
Tiny Fugue tf is, in my
opinion *the* client to have and use. It is configurable beyond all ability
to describe. It is simple looking but powerful (i.e. you can do all sorts of
things if you can just figure out how) If you'd like it, here's my
.tfrc file
mcl MUD client - simple,
easy to use, and it uses the ncurses library so it's nice to look at. The
config isn't hard and it'll have you up in a jiffy.
Networking stuff
ipchains Linux
Firewalling code. If you want/need it and you've got a 2.0.x kernel this is
what you want. Not hard to setup or maintain, just follow the HOWTOs and
you're there.
ssh(2) The secure shell, allows secure
communication between systems systems for remote logins, rcp, and ftp. Check it
out and see if you have a use for it.
qmail Much nicer than sendmail,
smaller and more secure. Best of all, no bizzare config file to make your
head hurt. Read the docs provided.
vnc (X) Virtual Network
Computing - Allows you to display a remote desktop on another machine. Can
display Windows9x and X. This one is a must see.
cold a network sniffer and a
protocol analyzer.
Miscellaneous stuff
gimp Gnu Image Manipulation Program -
When it comes to graphics this is possibly the finest I've seen in a
while. Screen capture, file formats, filters, its all there - only problem
is figuring out all it can do.
There are a lot of really nice apps out there that I didn't mention.
Eventually they may end up here. If you know of any that you think I might
like, email me and I'll check it
out.
If this list isn't enough and you want more just follow on through with the
nice folks here
Tache
PGP IMHO, a must have
necessity. Some freedoms are not appreciated until they are gone. Even if
you don't need encryption, it's still nice to have and use. Get it, use
it, you may one day lose it.
pgp4pine
A really nice add-on for pine that allows the use of PGP in pine.
zgv
A nice svgalib graphics viewer. Easy to use and has a
nice output. I use this with my lynx browser to view pictures while surfing.
If you want it, here's a snip of my lynx.cfg
where I configured it to call the zgv viewer (any viewer would work, I
just like zgv)
